Ruthless Jabiru to premiere Slipstream Monday 25th July

Monday, July 25, 2016 will see the world premiere of Michael Cryne‘s “Slipstream” performed by the London chamber orchestra Ruthless Jabiru as part of the Tempting Failure festival in London.

‘Slipstream’ was written for all-Australian String Orchestra Ruthless Jabiru as part of Sound and Music’s Portfolio Scheme. The piece is based on the sculpture created by Richard Wilson for Heathrow Airport in 2014. ‘Slipstream’ is inspired by the exhilarating potential of flight, coupled with the physical aesthetics of aircraft. Constructed in aluminium, the piece aimed to solidify the twisting velocity of a stunt plane manoeuvring through the volume of the new terminal. I aimed to capture this dynamism musically; energetic lines twist and turn with a constant sense of energy.

Conducted by its founding Artistic Director Kelly Lovelady, Ruthless Jabiru will perform the piece in a noise-inspired programme of music for string orchestra by Julia Wolfe, Gloria Coates, Cat Hope, Osvaldo Golijov and Michael Cryne exploring the aural narrative around the suffocation of the arts by fuel dependency. For this occasion, the new music ensemble dedicated to championing humanitarian stories through its performance will join forces with Art Not Oil calling for London’s cultural organisations to turn their backs on fossil fuels.

LPO Young Composers Programme

I'm delighted to have been selected to participate in the 2015/16 London Philharmonic Orchestra's Young Composers Programme.

The LPO Young Composers programme offers emerging composers the opportunity to workshop a new piece with the Orchestra's musicians across a year, leading to a public performance, showcasing the new works, at the Queen Elizabeth Hall. The participant composers are mentored by the LPO's Composer in Residence, who provides expertise and guidance in a series of seminars and workshops.

Celia's Toyshop selected for workshops with Kokoro and Bristol Ensemble

I'm very pleased to have been selected for two workshop performances, at the Annual RMA research students' conference in Bristol on the 9th January, and also the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra Composers' Day on Saturday 28 February 2015 at the lighthouse in Poole.

At both of the workshops, I'll be presenting Celia's Toyshop, a collection of miniatures for sextet, each inspired by a toy of some kind.

Sound and Music Re-launch New Voices

I'm delighted to be included in the re-launch of Sound and Music's New Voices scheme.  Selected early and mid-career composers are being showcased by Sound and Music, and there are over 50 composers in the first cohort.  Showcasing some of the most exciting compositional talent in the UK at the moment, I'm delighted to be included.  Check out the website, which features scores, recordings and other media here.
